About The 1911 Full Frame Commander Pistol:
Commander was introduced in 1952 by Colt. It has a four and a quarter
inch barrel, and a full size grip. The original Colt commanders had an
aluminum grip frame. They were chambered in .45 ACP, 9mm, and .38 Super.
In 1970, Colt introduced the Combat Commander, which was basically the
same pistol, but with a forged steel frame. The
commander model 1911 is generally 4.25″. The length, 4.25″ refers to
the barrel length. Some guns may be marketed as commander length with a
4″ bushingless barrel. They really aren’t considered a true commander
gun, more so the “mid-size”. For the purpose of grips and magazines,
this is still considered a full size gun. The 1911 Commander is made by
various Manufacturers including: Rock Island Armory, Smith & Wessen,
Kimber, Colt, Springfield, Wilson Combat,Taurus, Ruger, Nighthawk,
Para-Ordnance, Remington, Sig Sauer, and Ed Brown. Full Size
grips fit Colt Government (5" barrel) and Commander (4" barrel) 1911s
and all clones which follow the standard 1911 specs (note that 1911
grips do not fit the non-standard Taurus PT 1911) and use standard 1911
magazines (usually 7 or 8 rounds). The distance between the screw holes,
center-to-center is approximately 3 inches.
